Generic Duricef ( Cefadroxil )

Common Uses
Duricef is a cephalosporin antibiotic that works by disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to the death of susceptible bacteria. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive bacteria, including Staphylococcus species (both penicillinase-producing and non-producing) and Streptococcus, as well as gram-negative bacteria such as Shigella, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella, and some Proteus strains. This medication is commonly prescribed to treat infections affecting the respiratory tract, urinary system, pelvic organs, skin, soft tissues, bones (osteomyelitis), and eyes. Additionally, Duricef is used to prevent bacterial endocarditis and post-surgical infections.
Dosage and Administration
Typically, Duricef is taken once or twice daily, with a usual daily dose ranging between 1 and 2 grams. Dosage may vary based on individual patient needs and should be adjusted for children accordingly.
Precautions
Alcohol consumption should be avoided during treatment with Duricef. There is a risk of developing pseudomembranous colitis caused by Clostridium difficile, so any persistent diarrhea should be reported to your doctor. Mild diarrhea may resolve after stopping the medication. Pregnant women or those planning pregnancy should consult their doctor prior to using this drug.
Contraindications
- Allergic reactions to Duricef, penicillins, or penicillamine
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Caution advised in patients with chronic kidney disease or history of colitis
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include diarrhea, bowel inflammation (colitis), nausea, skin redness and swelling, rash, itching, vaginal irritation, vomiting, and in rare cases, seizures. Only a healthcare professional can determine if you should continue treatment based on your symptoms.
Drug Interactions
Duricef may increase the toxicity of polymyxins, aminoglycosides, and loop diuretics. There is also an elevated risk of bleeding when taken with platelet aggregation inhibitors and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose and take Duricef once daily, take it as soon as you remember and then wait 10-12 hours before the next dose. For twice daily dosing, maintain a 5-6 hour interval between doses. Never take a double dose.
Overdose
In the event of severe seizures, allergic reactions (such as hives, facial swelling, or tongue swelling), diarrhea, or signs of kidney failure, seek immediate medical attention.
Storage
Store Duricef at room temperature between 15-25°C (59-77°F), protected from moisture and light, and out of reach of children and pets. Do not use the medication past its expiration date. If using the suspension form, it should be refrigerated and used within 14 days of preparation.
